23rd Psalm Verse 1

Verse 23:1 - The Lord is my Shepherd; I shall not want.

Many people are familiar with the 23rd Psalm as it is commonly read at funerals. However, there is a deeper meaning.  David recognizes the character of God and what he means to him as he struggles with his own journey.  God is portrayed as a good Shepherd, feeding and leading his flock. David's interpretation is God as the caretaker in the psalm.

David prepares to shepherd his own flock of sheep. Instinctively sheep know their
shepherd, and the shepherd has made plans for its grazing for the day.  David knows that the Lord will provide him with all the things he needs for the day.

Psalm 23 expresses a pattern of thinking, while others call it the Psalm that calms the soul. It contains 118 words and six verses. It represents a hope and a faith approach to life.

Written in the 10th to 5th centuries B.C. and was believed to be written by David (King of
Israel) a shepherd himself at one time.  He wrote the Psalm to help people understand that the Lord is always present; even in difficult times. The Psalm reflects the experiences of a man who had gone through many valleys and struggles.

Psalms are prayers written often written to music. Today many Christian artists use the Psalms to create songs.  Here is an example of one using Psalm 103 has its inspiration.

  1. Heidi,
This is one of my favorite psalms because it is very grounding and soothing. It is common at funerals in my faith but I also find it to be a reassurance and place to refocus if life gets overwhelming or circumstances are unexplainable. I like the visuals you chose to accompany each verse- nicely done!
